Delabole Village

About Delabole Village

Delabole is the third highest village in Cornwall and overlooks both the ocean and the moors, thus affording the onlooker stunning views inland towards Roughtor and Brown Willy, with equally breathtaking seascapes of the North Cornwall coast in the same vista.

Delabole takes its name from the quarry around which it grew.

Since the 15th century the village has been inextricably linked with the quarrying of slate. The quarry is over 150 metres deep and 1.5 kilometres in circumference and produces a bluish grey slate that is of a very very high quality. Prior to the late 19th century Delabole consisted of three separate hamlets, Pengelly, Medrose and Rockhead. However, following the arrival of the railway, these three hamlets gradually merged and were given the collective name 'Delabole', after the aforementioned quarry. Delabole is a linear settlement that sits astride the B3314 road approximately 2 miles to the west of Camelford and 1 mile east of the coast. Delabole has experienced a steady rise in population in the past 30 years. The village now has many fine business and boasts a Beacon Status primary school. The surrounding countryside is designated as an area of great landscape value. A area of outstanding natural beauty is close by, has is the heritage coast which is less than a mile to the west.
